Climb the clock tower for a great view of the Alberni Inlet, visit the Forest Information Centre for a hands-on experience of the forest operations and book a woods or mill tour. Farmer's Market Alberni Quay. Buy fresh local produce, flowers and crafts on any Saturday from 10 to 1. Railway Station & 2-8-2T Baldwin Steam Locomotive Visit the restored station and ride the No. 7 along Port Alberni's industrial waterfront. Running on the hour on summer weekends. Rollin Art Centre & Public Gardens 2061 Eighth Avenue. Peaceful and restful gardens in restored pioneering homes that now house the Community Arts Council. HOURS: Monday-Friday: 9:30-4:30; Saturday: 10:00-4:00. Teas are served on the terrace in the summer. McLean Mill National Historic Site Twenty Minutes from town up Beaver Creak Road. Historic steam and sawmill with houses, outbuildings, dam and millpond is presently being restored. Fish Ladder And Stamp Falls Provincial Park Thirty minutes from town up Beaver Creek Road. Spectacular salmon runs can be viewed from the sighting areas at the falls from the fish ladder. |
Sproat Lake Provincial Park and campground. Great swimming and boating only fifteen minutes West of Port Alberni. Martin Mars Water Bombers At home on beautiful Sproat Lake, 15 minutes from town. The only two in the world, these two storey-high red and white planes are forest fighters! Overall length 36.6 M, carry 60,000 pounds of water and fire retardant. Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery On Great Central Lake Road, 20 minutes from town. See the life-cycle of the salmon from egg to release stage. HOURS: 8:30-4:30 Cathedral Grove Three Hundred and thirty acres of virgin forest twenty minutes from Port Alberni. Douglas Fir predominate, some of them over 800 years old! "The Grove" suffered a major storm in the winter of 1996 so go carefully and obey the new signage to see what nature can do to an old growth forest. Paper Mill Dam Park Great swimming in the Somass River. A paper mill was sited here earlier in the 20th century and the locals can still point out the remains. Follow Falls Road to the park entrance. Rogers Creek Park Rest awhile among these beautiful shady trees, have a picnic, let the kids run around for a while and watch the river babble by. Turn right off Gertude Street at Pemberton. Petroglyphs Sproat Lake. Follow the chip trail to the end to see this ancient artwork that is carved right into the wall. |

Walking & Hiking: The Log Train Trail The Log Train Trail Regional Park stretches for 25 KM along the foot of Beaufort Range. Maps available upon request. Kitsuksis Walkway Pleasant 3 KM stroll along Kitsuskis Creek on a paved walkway. Shady trees, children's playground with waterpark in the summer. Popular for walking or jogging. Access from Beaver Creek Road by the tennis courts. The Old Lookout Access is from the junction of Lacy Lake and Export Road. Take the left hand road to the lookout for a 10 minute walk for a panoramic view of the valley. Historic Walking Tours The Port Alberni History Society and the museum have produced pamphlets on two walking tours which encompass the Northport and Southport areas of Port Alberni. They take you on a tour of the city's historic areas and homes, giving an insight of days gone by. |

Annual Events Salmon Derby & Festival The Derby and Festival is held the last weekend in August and visitors come from all over Canada and the U.S. to catch "The Big One"! Largest fish caught was a 60 pound 8 ounce beauty and netted it's sportfisher some $5,000 in prize money. Fall Fair The Port Alberni Fall Fair was the winner of "Fair of the Year" award in 1996. It's well worth seeing! |
